Love My Life

If you want to read my review of Love my life, read this post. In ラブ マイ ライフ, Ichiko is the daughter of a gay man. But, she didn’t know that until the day she went to introduce her girlfriend, Eriko. Surprised by her father’s acceptance of her sexual orientation, she also found that her late mother was a lesbian. With that, several other questions arise in her head as she enjoys her sexuality, gets to know her parents better and has to deal with college activities.

Izumiya Ichiko (Rei Yoshii) is a university student, works in a CD store and lost her mother 7 years ago. Despite having a great relationship with her father, it took a lot of courage to introduce her girlfriend.

“As soon as our eyes met, I knew I was looking for her.”

Eriko (Asami Imajuku) is trying to be a lawyer and her hobby is literature. Unfortunately, her dad is an asshole who thinks being gay is a disease and that she couldn’t pass the exam to follow his and her brother’s footsteps.

“If you think about it, you’ll realize that the things that motivate you the most are the things you hate the most.”

Hosei, Ichiko’s father, reveals who was her mother’s girlfriend when she died and that he currently has a boyfriend. These shocking revelations about her father and mother cause a chain reaction in Ichiko’s life.

Hosei tells Ichiko that he was her mother’s best friend. But, they never fell in love. When they end their respective relationships, her mother felt like having a child and starting a family. Fortunately, he wanted the same thing.

Eri, even without being able to understand the logic, tries to help Ichiko understand how her parents’ relationship was, her father’s relationship with his current boyfriend and in what context she was conceived by her mother.

“But surely it made their lives more complete.”

Over time, she begins to feel more comfortable with the fact that her father is gay, has a boyfriend and wanted to have a child with his best friend. And she understands how much harder it must have been for his generation to make the decision and come out.

“Now, I know you’ve chosen a difficult path for your life.”

Chinami-san (Chiharu Kawai) was Ichiko’s mother’s last girlfriend. She apologizes for not telling the truth when she could. Meeting his mother’s ex-girlfriend was fundamental. Because, Ichiko could understand a little better about her parents.

“The person you love is not always the one you can give yourself to.”

Ichiko’s parents treated her very sweetly and this family base helps Ichiko to keep her spirits up, even in the face of the world’s disgust towards homosexuals.

Initially, her behavior is quite jovial. So it’s hard for her to understand some things. Including some of Eri’s decisions. But, she matures a lot over the course of the film.

Reviewing Love My Life: the relationship

Izumiya Ichiko (Rei Yoshii) and Eriko (Asami Imajuku) having sex in bed, without a bra in Love My Life.

Eriko had dated men before. More out of curiosity to know more about herself than because she like men. She was very confused at the time. Fortunately, Eri understands that she should love whoever she falls in love with.

Ichiko would like to come out of the closet soon. But Eri isn’t so confident that doing so would improve their lives at all, and she doesn’t want to risk having another problem to deal with.

Their relationship is very beautiful, balanced, full of affection and understanding. Eri is more mature because of family adversity, Ichiko is more positive and confident.
