The Last 10 Years

If you want to read my review of The Last 10 Years, read this post. In 余命10年, Matsuri Takabayashi has a terminal illness. So, she gave up on love, until she met Kazuto Manabe again.

Matsuri Takabayashi (Nana Komatsu) spent two years in hospital because of a fatal and incurable condition. She hid her rare disease from her friends.

“Get a boyfriend and work your ass off! Your life starts now”

Kazuto Manabe (Kentaro Sakaguchi) also went to live in Tokyo, but to escape his family. His life was in total disarray.

“In second year, the button on my school uniform fell off, and when you fixed it for me, I was so happy.”

Manabe was happy to see his classmates again. Mainly, Matsuri. However, he decided to jump from the apartment window, which caused several bodily injuries.

Takeru Tomita (Yuki Yamada) was Manabe’s best friend and informed Matsuri about what happened. Once in the hospital, she was frustrated to see a healthy person throwing his life away.

“I may not know much about you. But, this is so unfair of you.”

Matsuri’s words stuck in Manabe’s head. When he had the opportunity, he apologized for everything.

“I said a lot of childish things. Truly, my sincerest apologies.”

With tensions relieved, they developed a relaxed interaction and promised to do the best they could from that moment forward.

“For now, I just want to try what I can.”

As time went by, the two got a job and lived their lives along the lines of normality. Although, sometimes, the reality got Matsuri down.

As the definition of status between Matsuri and Hamabe became urgent, his physical conditions worsened.

“I had lung disease when I was 20.”

She got tired of fighting the disease for herself, for her family, didn’t want to see him anymore and was angry with everyone.

The Last 10 Years movie review: pulmonary hypertension

Nana Komatsu as Matsuri Takabayashi and Kentaro Sakaguchi as Kazuto Manabe talking in The Last 10 Years

Pulmonary arterial hypertension is a very rare disease that mainly affects women. One of his victims was Ruka Kosaka, author of the book that originated the film.

The main symptoms of PAH are the inability to perform physical activities, dizziness, low blood pressure and fatigue. If left untreated, 50% of carriers die in less than 3 years.

One difference between Ruka Kosaka’s real story and that experienced by Matsuri Takabayashi is that the author resisted until she was 39 years old.

I won’t leave The Last 10 Years ending explained or a download link here, but If you’re a fan of Nana Komatsu, like me, this Japanese film is an excellent choice!

Obviously the plot is a bit cliché. But what film industry on the planet doesn’t have its clichés? At least, this is in Japan. Is there a better place to film?
