If you want to read my review of Phases of the Moon, read this post. In 月の満ち欠け, Tsuyoshi Osanai lost his wife, Kozue Osanai, and daughter, Ruri Osanai, in a car accident. Years later, he discovers that they reincarnated to resolve unfinished business.
Tsuyoshi Osanai (Yo Oizumi) married Kozue Osanai, the woman of his dreams. Since then, he has been deeply in love with her.
“I’ve always felt that way and I always will.”
Kozue Osanai (Yamamura Yukie) also liked him a lot and was eager to have a child. Then, a year after the wedding, little Ruri was born.
“She came into my dreams and said her name would be that.”
Ruri had a strong fever for several days. But, the doctors could not find out the reason. But, Kozue-san noticed that Ruri started behaving, talking and making decisions as if she were an adult.
Phases of the Moon: japanese movie review

One day, with the memories of the previous incarnation, Ruri Masaki (Kasumi Arimura), when Ruri Osanai (Hinako Kikuchi) was 7 years old, she said goodbye to his schoolmates, took the train and went to a record store near Takadanobaba Station. Confirming Kozue-san’s suspicions
“I knew something wasn’t right with her!”
What Ruri Masaki wanted was to find her former lover, Akihiko Misumi-san (Ren Meguro). They had a love story when she was married to Masaki-san (Kei Tanaka) in the previous incarnation.
Of course, Osanai-san was scared, not knowing why his daughter, Ruri Osanai, was behaving like that. So, she vowed not to act like that anymore until she graduated.
“I won’t go far till a graduate from high school.”
In middle school she met her best friend, Yui Midorisaka (Sairi Ito), and before she graduated, Ruri Osanai told her the truth about the memories of her reincarnated spirit, Ruri Masaki.
“We return to life. But, most people lose their memories in their past lives.”
By coincidence, Osanai-san worked with Masaki-san and he realized that Ruri Osanai was the reincarnation of his ex-wife, Ruri Masaki.
So he pursued her and her mother, causing them to be involved in a fatal accident, leaving Osanai-san without a wife and daughter.
Many years later, Yui reunited with Osanai-san to tell the truth about his daughter, Ruri Osanai.
“Kozue-san, sensed it too, righ? that Ruri was an old soul, who remembered her past life.”
Osanai-san acted in complete disbelief. But, to his utter astonishment, he discovered that Ruri has been reincarnated once more, as Yui’s daughter, and holds all the memories of past lives.
Reviewing Phases of the Moon: reincarnation

In this matter, I side with Osanai-san. I would have a hard time believing that Yui’s story is true.
But if it is, it is a great comfort to know that those you loved and lost have a second chance to live and find peace and happiness.
Some religions believe that if someone dies with very important unfinished business, there is a possibility that the next incarnation will continue to pursue the same thing.
Why you should watch Phases of the Moon
