Weathering with You

If you want to read my review of Weathering with You, read this post. In 天気の子, Hodaka has run away from home and takes a writing job in Tokyo. There, he meets Hina, a girl with the ability to control the weather.

Hodaka Morishima (Kotaro Daigo) is 16 years old and has run away from home to live in Tokyo. There he gets a job as a writer of local stories for an office that serves several magazines.

“This is a story only she and I know about it.”

Hina Amano (Nana Mori) is 17 years old and works part-time at MacDonalds. Unfortunately, her mother is hospitalized in a very bad state of health.

“It will clear up now.”

On a very rainy day, a single beam of sunlight illuminated a shrine on top of a building. Hina went to investigate and walked through the shrine praying with all her heart for her mother’s health to improve. From that moment on, she gained special powers to manipulate the weather.

Hodaka was saved before falling from the boat into the sea by an unknown man, Keisuke Suga (Shun Oguri), and for the rest of the trip they became friends.

“If you ever need help, contact me.”

For a while, Hodaka lived as he could. But, the money ran out. So, he couldn’t keep up anymore. Therefore, he began to live on the streets of Kabukicho (歌舞伎町).

“Tokyo is scary. But, I don’t want to go home. Never again.”

Hodaka first met Hina when she presented him with a hamburger after he fell asleep at one of the tables at MacDonalds.

“I think that was the most delicious dinner I’ve had in all 16 years of my life.”

With that boost of energy Hodaka goes to look for Keisuke’s office, there he meets Natsumi Suga (Tsubasa Honda), and gets a job as a writer for local magazines.

“This is when my new life started.”

Hodaka and Natsumi started interviewing people about the existence of a sunny girl. The girl who makes the sun come up wherever she goes.

Some time later, Hodaka finds Hina and prevents her from accepting the proposal of pimps on the street.

“I got fired from my part-time job.”

In return for the kindness Hina showed Hodaka her power to bring the sun and with the emergence of this friendship they will change the shape of the world.

Reviewing Weathering with You: hare onna (晴れ女)

Hina Amano (Nana Mori) raising her hand to block the sound beam in Weathering with You.

Hare onna (晴れ女), means sunny woman. That is a woman who always brings the sun when she arrives somewhere.

Other terms commonly used in Japan are: hare otoko (晴れ男), sunny man. Ame onna (雨女), rainy woman and ame otoko (雨男), rainy man.

All refer to the people who always bring rain or sun. So, whenever you have an event scheduled with these people, the weather will be good or bad.

Why you should watch Weathering with You

I won’t leave Weathering with You ending explained or a download link here, but in my humble opinion, as a mere viewer, it wasn’t this time that Makoto Shinkai surpassed The Garden Of Words. But Weathering with You is still a wonderful Japanese film with beautiful images and soundtrack.

Another very exciting thing to see was that Taki-kun married Mitsuha after they bumped into each other at the end of Your Name.

I really feel that you will like this one. So I decided to do this Tenki no Ko review. Go ahead, immerse yourself in the story, the environment and the Radwimps soundtrack.

And come back later to tell me what you think in the comments. This Japanese movie was Makoto Shinkai’s creative reflection of how the weather affects our moods and feelings.
