And Your Bird Can Sing

If you want to read my review of And Your Bird Can Sing, read this post. In きみの鳥はうたえる, three young people from northern Japan (函館市, 北海道) who know very well how to live the pleasures of adult life while avoiding responsibilities, become involved in a love triangle during the summer.

The unnamed narrator, who I’ll call Boku (Tasuku Emoto) lives with his best friend, Shizuo (Shôta Sometani), and works part-time at a bookstore. Whenever he feels like it, he absentmindedly skips work. For example, if he woke up feeling lazy.

“I thought that summer would never end.”

Sachiko (Shizuka Ishibashi) works at the same bookstore and has a hidden relationship with the store manager. She takes the initiative in the relationship with Boku and asks him out.

“I don’t want the relationship to be complicated.”

From the relationship between Boku and Sachiko, Shizuo is introduced. He is very relaxed, values the pleasures of life and knows very well how to enjoy them. Nothing really seemed to upset the love triangle that formed.

Within the triviality of everyday life in Hakodate, Hokkaido, the three become intimately involved, with great chemistry. Always very relaxed and careful with each other. Until now, Sachiko was dating Boku. But, she developed a very strong affection for Shizuo early on.

“Then wish me good night.”

Boku was very comfortable with Sachiko and Shizuo’s relationship. He acts casually and encourages the freedom Sachiko is entitled to, even with his best friend.

“Shizuo asked me to go to the movies.”

Sachiko immersed herself in the nightlife with the two friends and the three enjoyed the fleeting moments lived during the magic and melancholy of summer.

Sachiko’s attraction to some of Shizuo’s features was becoming more and more evident. Particularly, the smell. In addition, other aspects of the friendship between the two influenced her.

“It’s good that you have Shizuo in your life.”

At the same time, Sachiko was still dating the bookstore manager and Boku didn’t care. But, she decides that she is going to end the relationship with the boss.

“It sucks. I want to end this.”

Afterwards, Sachiko resigns from the bookstore, spending less time with Boku and, naturally, more free time with Shizuo. Boku began to feel jealous of the relationship between the two.

“You want to ask me if I’m jealous? Okay, I’m jealous.”

When Sachiko was really in love, she decided that she wanted to be with Shizuo and Boku tried to be as understanding as possible. But, he couldn’t help defending his own desires, even if it cost Sachiko and Shizuo’s happiness.

Reviewing And Your Bird Can Sing: my thoughts on polyamory

I believe that people would like to be much more relaxed in romantic relationships with several people at the same time than they actually are. I feel that there is a desire to show that everyone deals with much more naturalness than reality.

I’ve heard some stories that didn’t end very well, particularly for the person who idealized the love triangle. Because the other people ended up getting very close and the complicity between them made them decide to assume a monogamous love relationship.

Maybe one or two people in the love triangle really idealize polygamy. But, I don’t believe everyone involved feels that way. This leaves room for hurt, frustration, and possibly the end of the main relationship.

I won’t leave And Your Bird Can Sing ending explained or a download link here, but If you’re into polygamy or curious about what the dynamic might be like, this Japanese film takes a very lighthearted look at the good points of being in love with multiple people at once.

But, it also shows that if disagreements begin to arise between the main couple, one of the people involved in the love triangle may end up losing not one, but two loves at the same time.
