Eternal 831

If you want to read my review of Eternal 831, read this post. In 永遠の831, the housing bubble was the worst event to occur in Japan since WWII, and during those decades, Suzushiro discovers that Nazuna has the same power to stop time, but she is working for terrorists.

Suzushirō Asano (Soma Saito) managed to move to Tokyo thanks to a scholarship from the newspaper Toto Shinbun, and he worked as a delivery boy.

“Last year, a classmate took his own life because of me.”

Nazuna Hashimoto (Mao Ichimichi) had lived through worse than his, and since the age of 11, she had stopped time during moments of emotional stress.

“It’s because I realized there was someone besides me who could stop time.”

The two became aware of each other’s existence and, since then, had been searching for each other, but she was recruited by the terrorist cell.

Time Stop was triggered when Asano got angry, but he had no control over the triggering or its duration.

“The first time it happened, I think it lasted about 3 minutes.”

When Asano was pursued by the parents of the classmate who took his own life and by the other students, the Time Stopped lasted for more than a week.

“That was the moment I discovered how to stop time.”

From then on, he began to wander through frozen time to make his work easier, and that’s how he found Nazuna.

“How was she able to move?”

Next, terrorist attacks carried out by a group called Front 831 occur, and, based on their modus operandi, Asano presumes they were using Nazuna to stop time.

“Let’s get out of here.”

The problem is that the terrorist group was led by her brother, Seri Agawa (Kazuyuki Okitsu). He was all she had and was able to move during the Time Stop because he was with her the first time.

By the end of the 1980s, Japan was growing to become one of the largest, if not the largest, economies in the world, aided by post-war investments.

The United States felt threatened and forced Japan to appreciate its currency, the yen, plunging the country into decades of economic stagnation.

Among other meanings, 831 alludes to August 31st, the month in which the financial market realized that the bursting of the housing bubble was irreversible.

I won’t leave Eternal 831 ending explained or a download link here, but I’ve made it clear that space-time manipulation is a favorite theme of mine.

And after reviewing countless Japanese films, my favorites are The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Until I Meet September’s Love.
