A Girl Named Ann

If you want to read my review of A Girl Named Ann, read this post. In あんのこと, Ann is a drug-addicted call girl who heroically tries to get back on her feet with the help of a journalist and a police officer.

Ann Kagawa (Yuumi Kawai) is 21 years old, lives with her mother and grandmother. Since she was 12 years old, was forced by her mother to sell herself.

“I didn’t go to school, so I don’t understand difficult things”

Tamotsu Tatara (Jiro Sato) is an exotic police officer who gives yoga classes and lectures to the self-help group run by him.

“If you want to quit drugs, come here. It’s twice a week”

They met because, while selling herself, Ann’s client went into a seizure due to drug abuse and she ended up being arrested.

Kirino Tatsuya is a reporter who works alongside Tatara, attending the Salvage clinic and reporting on the subject for over three years.

Ann made the right decision about her life, but when she returned home, she relived the daily hell of living with her abusive mother, Harumi Kagawa (Aoba Kawai).

“Your body is mine! Hurry up and sell it!”

At the extreme opposite of her mother, Ann’s grandmother, Emiko, was a sweetheart to her, treating her granddaughter with all the affection she could give.

“When I was a kid, my grandmother protect me from my mother‘s violence”

So, in order to return the love, Ann wanted to learn how to work in a nursing home. That way, she could take care of her grandmother, who had special needs.

With Kirino and Tatara helping, Ann managed to move to an apartment building intended for women who suffered domestic violence or were stalked.

“It is forbidden to publish your address. Women with all kinds of problems live here.”

Ann was managing to get back on her feet and build a decent life where she could smile, but she was still persecuted and harassed by her mother.

“You and your mother are two different people. You don’t have to carry your mother’s problems.”

Everything was going well until Tatara was reported for abusing women in the self-help group and the COVID emerged, closing all services in the help program. Leaving Ann helpless.

It isn’t enough to fight with weapons alone. Addiction is a public health problem. Alcohol, for example, is legal, but there are still people who abuse it and need help.

In addition to police work, a broad support structure is needed for people who have already lost their personal battles against addictions.

State services such as shelters, self-help programs, schools and job opportunities to restore dignity to those in need.

Why you should watch A Girl Named Ann

I won’t leave A Girl Named Ann ending explained or a download link here, but this Japanese movie brings up a very important subject, the existence of wolves in sheep’s clothing.

And the script gave Yuumi Kawai the opportunity to show a great performance. With every movie I watch with her, I become a little more of a fan.
