If you want to read my review of Matching, read this post. In マッチング, Rinka was losing hope in love. So she tried a dating app, without imagining that her suitor would become suspect in a series of homicides involving couples who met online.
Rinka Tadashima (Tao Tsuchiya) is 29 years old, works at Nagata Wedding and, without any emotional prospects, still lives with her father.
“Tell me, father. Do you want me to get married?”
Yoshiki Tadashima (Tetta Sugimoto) is single since Rinka was 4 years old. His ex-wife’s biggest dream was to see their daughter wearing a wedding dress.
“Ever since elementary school, when you liked a boy, you would back away afterwards.”
With her work friend pushing the issue and through the Will Will app, Rinka met Tomu (Daisuke Sakuma). He was poorly dressed, gloomy and with terrible social skills. Couldn’t have started worse.
Matching review: Unveiling and intriguing
Tragicomically, Rinka and Tom had a 97% match and Nagata Wedding had just partnered with Will Will. The goal was to reverse the decline in users due to the news.
“Serial murders of newlyweds who met on an app.”
At birth, Tom was abandoned in a train station coin locker and his biggest dream was to meet his biological mother.
“Do you always talk about this when you meet someone?”
Rinka consulted Will Will’s software engineer, Tsuyoshi Kageyama (Nobuaki Kaneko), about Tomu’s inappropriate behavior.
“This man has already caused several problems in other dating app as well.”
Tom began pressuring Rinka to meet again, sending her seemingly meaningless messages and following her home.
“Nowadays, we can easily get hold of personal information.”
While all this was happening, the pile of bodies only grew and in two of these weddings Rinka was the officiant.
“This is the fifth murder involving newlywed couples who met on an app.”
The most serious clue was that one of the grooms was her former teacher, the man she loved most in her life and Tom had a police record. So, the officer Akane Nishiyama (Sei Matobu) placed them under investigation.
Matching review: don’t follow the herd
Many times we put ourselves in situations of extreme discomfort and danger just to be part of the pack, to be accepted into the group.
If you are not good at romantic relationships, don’t push it. If you are not good at a certain lifestyle, don’t force it. Don’t go with the flow.
I know it is impossible to get rid of the social constructs that are contemporary to us, but the simple fact of knowing that they exist can make your life much easier.
Why you should watch Matching
I won’t leave Matching ending explained or a download link here, but If you’ve had a weird experience on dating apps, this Japanese movie is a must.
Furthermore, the script is much more engaging than it seems. Secrets involving Rinka’s father and her missing mother emerge throughout the film.
