Love At Least

If you want to read my review of Love At Least, read this post. In }, Yasuko is a Hikikomori girl who have depression and hypersomnia. She tries to work her away out of her negative thoughts and move on with life.

Yasuko (Shuri) is unemployed and even in adulthood she is haunted by memories of school life. Now, she is exhausted.

“When I was a high school girl, school life became very difficult somehow.”

Tsunaki (Masaki Suda) is the editor of the tabloid Weekly Saturday Might. In other words, the profit was in finding and publicizing bad things about people.

“I think it’s the worst thing you can do.”

Tsunaki was pathetic and Yasuko was frustrated. Sometimes she used him as an escape valve. Other times, she wanted him to change and be more in charge of his ideas, and that’s how they worked as a couple.

Love At Least review: the black sheep of the family

Masaki Suda Tsunagi talking to Shuri as Yasuko in Love At Least

Yasuko believed that if she didn’t exist it would be a great relief in people’s lives. She was sure that she only existed to make others feel better by seeing her misery.

“If your hypersomnia is cured, I’ll breathe a huge sigh of relief.”

Yasuko lived in Tsunaki’s house, she didn’t help at all and he reacted apathetically. He just served things in her hands, even job opportunities.

“Working at a convenience store when you’re depressed is horrible.”

Interactions with her family were riddled with insensitive comments, and this consumed Yasuko mentally, keeping her trapped in her own negative thoughts

“I don’t even know if your boyfriend is going to kick you out of the house or not.”

Tsunaki was also apathetic towards the immorality of his sensationalist work. The only colleague who had ethical concerns was Misato (Shizuka Ishibashi).

“An actress committing suicide again. I don’t want that.”

Then Tsunaki’s ex-girlfriend, Ando (Riisa Naka), appears, urging Yasuko to face her mental instability, accept the job offer from Murata (Tetsushi Tanaka) and move on with her life so that she can get back together with Tsunaki.

Love At Least review: hikikomori meaning

Shuri as Yasuko hyper sleeping at home and feeling hikikomori in Love At Least

Hikikomori means extreme social withdrawal and occurs all over the world. Around 700,000 of these individuals are in Japan. Most of them are young people.

They live with their parents, secluded in their rooms for more than 6 months, tired of the social pressures generated by families, schools, colleges and companies.

Experts say that the demands, pressures and expectations of Japanese society contribute sharply to the social phenomenon.
