NANA

If you want to read my review of NANA, the movie, read this post. In ナナ, two totally different girls, named Nana, meet on the train, while moving to Tokyo, where they end up visiting the same apartment and choosing to live together.

Nana Komatsu (Aoi Miyazaki) was going to Tokyo to meet her boyfriend, Shouji Endo (Yuta Hiraoka). They planned to live together when he was approved for college.

“Hey, Nana. Do you remember the day we met?”

Nana Osaki (Mika Nakashima) loved Ren (Ryuhei Matsuda) and with Yasushi Takagi (Tomomi Maruyama) and Nobou Terashima (Hiroki Narimiya) they were the band BLAST. When they started to be successful, Ren broke up with Nana, left band and left town.

“Ren taught me the happiness of singing.”

Two years later, Nana boarded the train to Tokyo in search of a new band. Sitting next to her was the other Nana and the only thing they had in common was their name and age. But, the time travel enabled the emergence of an affective connection that would transcend differences.

NANA: japanese movie review

Upon arriving in Tokyo, Nana Komatsu intended to live with Shouji and become a good housewife. But, he wanted her to have a more independent lifestyle. So, she had to find a place to stay.

“You didn’t come to Tokyo to do these things, did you?”

By mistake, two realtors from different companies took Nana Komatsu and Nana Osaki at the same time to visit apartment 707. They decided to share the apartment. With that, two women with completely different styles and dreams became roommates and best friends.

With an introverted way of showing affection, Nana Osaki nicknamed Nana Komatsu as Hachiko, the famous dog. The extroverted Hachiko, on the other hand, had no difficulty in demonstrating the admiration she had for Nana.

“I was captivated by her voice as if I were being placed under some kind of mysterious spell.”

Hachiko helped Nana find a new bassist, Shinichi Okazaki (Kenichi Matsuyama), and relaunch BLAST with Yasu and Nobou. Nana, on the other hand, helped Hachiko get over being fired from work. More and more they were partners in life.

“I had no concerns or doubts about living with you.”

Nana went over to Shouji and comforted Hachi, when they both caught him in the act with a co-worker.

“What the hell is this? Say something! Let’s go! Explain!”

The two Nanas go on with their lives, friendships and chasing each other’s desires, always counting on each other’s help. At one point, Hachi found out about Nana’s past with Ren, BLAST and to her surprise, Nana agreed to go with her to the TRAPNEST concert and come face to face with him.

Hachi was a fan of TRAPNEST, long before she met Nana. So, she didn’t know that Ren had been invited and that’s why he abandoned everything to reach the top.

On the other hand, Nana wanted to live off her music. Singing her dreams and not becoming a housewife and waiting every night for him.

Basically, she chose dreams, pride, her essence over love. I can understand that. I don’t think anything is worth you stop being who you really are.

Why you should watch the movie NANA

I won’t leave NANA ending explained or a download link here, but you’ll see that this live action is a very faithful adaptation. Everyone who is an anime fan suffers when an adaptation is made for the cinema. That isn’t the case here. It’s all pretty identical.

In addition, it is a super mature japanese movie, within the idea that the two Nanas were 20 years old. The dialogues are dense and, for those who like rock, the soundtrack is wonderful.
