Demon City

If you want to read my review of Demon City, read this post. In Demon City 鬼ゴロシ, Shuhei is a assassin who decides to retire to live in peace, but a gang takes his family from him and so he becomes a demon consumed by revenge.

Shuhei Sakata (Toma Ikuta) was a bloodthirsty killer at service of the criminal world, at night. During the day, he was a good husband and father.

“I think I’ll start looking for another job tomorrow.”

Akira Fujita (Taro Sugura) was Shuhei’s partner and helped him negotiate and execute the contracted services.

“I shouldn’t have let you have a family. It was fun!”

Unbeknownst to him, Shuhei was hired to overthrow the ruling Konogumi gang. With the job done, killing him and his family was part of the cover-up.

With the new criminal organization, Kimengumi, in power, represented by Mayor Sunohara, Shinjo changed for the worse.

“This city has seen a 15% increase in the number of missing people.”

When Shuhei woke up from his coma 12 years after the massacre staged as a suicide, the city was in chaos and poverty.

“Shinjo has changed a lot in just a decade, hasn’t it?”

Naturally, it wouldn’t take long to kinengumi discover that Shuhei had come out of the state of inaction and left the prison hospital.

“That night, when we found out you weren’t dead, our master ordered us to leave you alive for some reason.”

Trying to kill him was the last push Shuhei needed to regain his movements and fulfill the promise he made to his tormentors.

“When a person is consumed by revenge, he becomes a demon.”

Furious, Sakata goes after them one by one and he discovers that his daughter, Ryo Sakata (Ami Toma), didn’t die and is being raised by Kanta Fuse (Masahiro Higashide).

Demon City review: Oni out, luck in

Oni in Demon City japanese movie review

There are many similarities and differences between the representations of oni in Japanese culture and demons in the Western world.

With a bestial appearance, horns and sharp teeth, these terrifying and malicious giants punish sinners and bring chaos.

They live in mountains, forests, caves and the underworld, Jigoku. In some legends, oni are also cannibals.

Why you should watch Demon City

I won’t leave Demon City ending explained or a download link here and I didn’t watch the anime Oni Goroshi, which gave rise to this Live Action.

So, I don’t know how much they respected the original work, but I found this to be a great Japanese movie in its own right. Full of action and with great choreography.
