If you want to read my review of Solanin, read this post. In ソラニン, Meiko and Taneda fell in love in college and try to deal with the uncertainties of adult life together. Until a fatality happens and Taneda loses his life. Now, Meiko is determined to pay tribute as best as she can.
Meiko Inoue (Aoi Miyazaki) worked in an office and couldn’t fit into the adult world. With Taneda’s support, she decides to resign.
“Without knowing how to continue living, this poison accumulates in my body.”
Naruo Taneda (Kengo Kora) had a part-time job, in his spare time, a Power Trio with Jiro “Billy” Yamada, Kenichi Kato and lived modestly with Meiko.
“It will be okay if we are together.”
He wanted to support Meiko’s search for a place in life. However, he was terrified because he also didn’t know what to do and was skeptical about the possibility of making a living from music. So, they would have to face life’s uncertainties together.
Soranin: japanese movie review
The 5 friends met at the college’s rock club and from there the power trio formed by Taneda, Kato and Billy emerged.
“At the time we met, even with sadness and difficulties, there was always something that excited us.”
Since graduation, the band had stopped playing shows. However, they still met twice a month for rehearsals.
Kato was the bass player, hadn’t managed to graduate yet and had a job at a musical instrument store.
Billy (Kenta Kiritani) was the drummer and would inherit the family pharmacy. Which, apparently, would give him a more peaceful future.
In fact, none of the three were very comfortable with the possibilities of the future and didn’t want to abandon their dream of making a living from the band.
“I intended to be a part of it anyway.”
One day, Meiko didn’t let Taneda escape the most serious conversation they would have and made him face his own fears.
“Then, if it doesn’t work out, we’ll see what to do.”
With that, the band recorded their first CD and sent it to several record companies. Unfortunately, before they succeed, Taneda passed away in an accident, leaving the love of his life, his best friends and the band aimless.
Solanin review: kung fu generation
As I’ve mentioned several times in posts on this Japanese movies blog, all these different plots lead me to think about some aspects of life and draw differences and similarities.
As Japan has a full employment situation economically, we are led to think that everyone has a guaranteed future. But stability is not synonymous with happiness.
Perhaps, all we need is to have the opportunity to do different things, test ourselves in different circumstances and only after reflecting on everything, make important decisions about our futures.
Why you should watch Solanin
I won’t leave Solanin ending explained or a download link here, but, it’s really cool. Especially if you are a fan of Japanese music, like me. So, I totally recommend it.
Solanin is a Japanese movie that reminded me of an anime, called Beck, about a band trying to gain space in the music scene. It was one of the best anime I watched.
