If you want to read my review of Moonlight Shadow, read this post. In ムーンライト・シャドウ, Satsuki turns to the Moonlight Shadow phenomenon for one more chance to talk to the love of her life, Hitoshi, who died in a car accident.
Hitoshi (Hio Miyazawa) is 20 years old and has a younger brother, Hiragi, who is 17 years old. One day, Hiragi asked to meet Satsuki at the dinner he was going to prepare.
“I have a younger brother and he said he wants to meet you.”
Satsuki (Nana Komatsu) happily accepted the invitation and, on that day, she also got to meet Yumiko. Hitoshi’s sister-in-law and, after that event, the four became great friends.
“The time the four of us had together was precious, too.”
That same day, the four talked about the Moonlight Shadow Phenomenon. Nobody knew for sure if it was true and how the ritual was supposed to be performed. However, if done correctly and on the right day, the living could talk to the dead.

The relationship between Satsuki and Hitoshi was happy and healthy. But when a friend of hers offered her a bigger apartment, Hitoshi didn’t accept Satsuki’s invitation to live with her.
In fact, he just wanted to postpone the invitation for a year to have more time with his brother, who was psychologically unstable.
“But, thanks to Yumiko, he was becoming more stable.”
Unfortunately, that day never came. Hitoshi gave Yumiko a car ride to her house, and on the way, they died in an accident.
“There was an accident, they both died.”
After that tragic event, Satsuki and Hiragi were devastated. Each tried to deal with the pain of loss in any way they could. Satsuki has adopted the race.
“I finally learned how to breathe.”
Hiragi, on the other hand, started to wear Yumiko’s clothes in public. In an attempt to keep her existence alive. None of the actions were really effective in overcoming depression.
“But, the sound exists only in my mind.”
However, their friendship was of great help. Anyway, it was in one of the races that Satsuki met Urara (Asami Usuda), a mysterious woman who was able to perform the moonlight shadow ritual.
“I want him to come see me.”
Hiragi, unlike Satsuki, wasn’t so sure about the idea of meeting the dead. Either way, he’ll need to decide soon, considering the Moonlight Shadow Phenomenon won’t occur again for another 100 years.
Reviewing Moonlight Shadow: every 100 years
I would side with Hiragi. Even if the ritual is effective, I’m not sure it’s a good idea to have contact with the world of the dead.
Satsuki has made the best of her relationship with Hitoshi. However, she didn’t have enough time to get to know him as deeply as she would like. So, she thought it might be worth a try.
Even if I was in her position. I would find it too dangerous to try and at the end of the day, I’m not sure the meeting would bring her any comfort. There would be a chance of farewell. But, it would be a second loss.
Why you should watch Moonlight Shadow
I won’t leave Moonlight Shadow ending explained or a download link here, but not all of you have the same kind of faith as Satsuki. Even so, this Japanese film still serves to teach us valuable lessons.
One is that we need to learn to make the most of what we have. Because, you never know what might happen and how much longer we’ll be able to enjoy it.
