If you want to read my review of Her Granddaughter, read this post. In 娚の一生, Dozono Tsugumi really likes to stay at her grandmother’s house in the countryside. Unfortunately, her grandmother died and she decides to take care of the house. Out of the blue, a former student of her grandmother appears and says he has the right to live in the adjoining house. Thus, they begin to live together in this strange arrangement.
Kaieda Jun (Etsushi Toyokawa) teaches philosophy at Kadoshima University (鹿児島大学). He says he was Towa-san’s student at the dyeing college, and he shows up unexpectedly to offer his condolences.
“Last night, I moved into the annexe.”
Dozono Tsugumi (Nana Eikura) works remotely for an IT company in Tokyo. She just lost her grandmother, Towa-san, who has a home studio. After the funeral, she decides to stay a little longer and take care of the house.
“This is my grandmother’s house.”
When the stove in the adjoining house stops working, Tsugumi is compelled to invite this rude and intrusive stranger for meals in the main house. She had no idea what kind of involvement this middle-aged man had with Towa-san. But, she respects the decision of her late grandmother, who gave him the key and opened the doors of the house for him.
Her Granddaughter: japanese movie review

Living with Jun, in the annex, is hell in Tsugumi’s life. He’s petulant and cheeky, he thinks she has to do his housework and even when it’s time to praise, he does it insolently.
“You made a good miso soup. Although, it’s a little too strong.”
In addition to domestic misfortunes, Tsugumi is in a small town, in the countryside of Japan, where her grandmother was and she is known by all the residents. Consequently, the neighbors start to get involved. Mostly, jealous men.
“Hey, he could be a rogue and a murderer.”
From another perspective, some elderly and young neighbors find Jun’s impudence very normal, because they had the same old-fashioned upbringing in Japan. Even some female college students, despite his rudeness, have a crush on him.
Despite the huge contrast between the way of thinking in Tokyo and the countryside, Tsugumi wants to spend as much time as possible at her grandmother’s house. Thus, she sees herself in the need to establish the minimum limit for Jun.
“I’ll cook and do the laundry. We’ll split the food bill. You chop the wood and prepare the baths.”
The truth is, Jun enjoyed teasing Tsugumi and, with the two of them having such different upbringings, it wasn’t hard for him to do so.
However, Tsugumi didn’t want to go back to Tokyo. She had ended a troubled relationship and was looking for a better quality of life, considering the possibility of taking over her late grandmother’s studio and little by little, Jun enters Tsugumi’s head and heart.
“I don’t give a shit about your past. You can’t go back. So why don’t you see me standing here now? I won’t leave you alone.”
Tsugumi stops being irritated and starts to care about Jun. Even though he is what some call an “old-fashioned man”, Jun truly demonstrates that he cares for Tsugumi and that she should value herself and be happy.
Her Granddaughter movie: metropolitan man vs country man

It is evident that the education of a person in the big city will conflict with another person in the countryside. I don’t know which way of life is the most correct, which way of thinking and acting is the better one. In the countryside and in the city are mens with an old way of thinking, just like Jun.
And from a female perspective, I know even less which male behavior would be seen as best, the contemporary way or the old-fashioned way, and which would be more cost-effective in a long-term relationship.
At my age, the only thing I know is that the variety of female desires is endless, unpredictable, and each woman, in her own way, pursues this desire.
Why you should watch Her Granddaughter

I won’t leave Her Granddaughter ending explained or a download link here, but If you like the old-fashioned man, this is definitely one of the best Japanese movie indications for you.
If you don’t like it, maybe it will serve to show you that it is possible to find a balance between your way and the other person’s way of thinking. I also believe that seeing Tsugumi’s different experiences with Jun can make people open their minds to other ways of loving and living together.
Her Granddaughter trailer
I really feel that you will like this one. So I decided to do this Otoko to Isshô review. Go ahead, immerse yourself in the story, the environment and the soundtrack.
And come back later to tell me what you think in the comments. This was one of the most controversial forms of love I have ever seen in a Japanese film. Really, a love story for adults.
