Last Winter, We Parted

If you want to read my review of Last Winter, We Parted, read this post. In 去年の冬、君と別れ, Kyosuke Yakumo is a freelance writer and risks his life to prove that a renowned photographer let one of his models die in a fire just to take morbid photos.

Yoshiki Kobayashi (Kazuki Kitamura) was a newspaper editor and didn’t want to risk being prosecuted for investigating a suspect in a closed case.

“If we accused him of murder now, we’d get sued for libel.”

Yakumo Kyosuke (Takanori Iwata) was an investigative writer looking for material for his next book and received an anonymous tip saying that Yudai Kiharazaka (Takumi Saito) had let one of his models die in a fire just to take pictures.

“Kiharazaka didn’t try to save Yoshioka. He kept shooting.”

Akiko Yoshioka (Kaho Tsuchimura) was a blind model. Therefore, she had no way to escape the flames. So if Yakumo’s journalistic sources were right, the photos still existed and Kiharazaka could be accused of abandonment resulting in death. He had to investigate.

Kiharazaka was a world-renowned photographer and had a history that involved obsessive behavior, stalking models and even cases of confinement.

“I immediately tried to save her. But it was too late.”

Yakumo made the first visit to Kiharazaka and began interviewing people who knew him in order to gather information for his next book.

“Is there some truth that didn’t come out?”

From that moment on, Yakumo started to risk his life. Consequently, so does his fiancée, Yuriko Matsuda (Mizuki Yamamoto). They began to be followed.

Kiharazaka and his sister, Akari, were stabbed and lost their father in a home invasion. The mother had previously died.

“This childhood trauma undoubtedly influenced the formation of Kiharazaka’s personality.”

Kiharazaka always wanted what others had and with an obsessive personality, he was capable of doing anything. Even keep a person in private prison.

“He wouldn’t let her go for three days.”

Yakumo didn’t know. But, the plot that he and Yuriko had been involved in was much more intertwined than he could imagine. Kobayashi, Kiharazaka and Akari had known each other for a lot longer than he thought and the three of them would do anything to keep their secrets buried.

The matriarch of the Kiharazaka family died when Yudai and Akari were still very young. Therefore, they were created only by the father.

The father was an abuser. He physically abused Yudai and sexually abused Akari. With the mysterious murder of their father, the brothers grew up in an orphanage.

Yudai and Akari grew up emotionally unstable, with personality disorders and developed an incestuous relationship.
