If you want to read my review of After the Rain, read this post. In 恋は雨上がりのように, Akira Tachibana is a former youth athlete who has fallen in love with her work manager, Masami Kondo, a divorced man who is old enough to be her father.
Akira Tachibana (Nana Komatsu) is 17 years old, works part-time at a restaurant, and was an A’s in athletics. But, an injury forced her to leave the racetrack.
“It won’t rain today. That’s because the scar on my leg doesn’t hurt.”
Masami Kondo (Yo Oizumi) is a 45-year-old divorced father who is pathetically apologizing for everything. All he gets from others is disdain.
“He’s the type who will spend his whole life as a manager.”
Kondo-san didn’t have any sex appeal. Even so, he piqued Tachibana-san’s interest and she devoted all her free time to working at Cafe Restaurant Garden and having as much contact with him as possible.
After The Rain: japanese movie review

Tachibana had no interest in boys her age, and initially, the self-deprecating Kondo-san had no idea of her feelings.
“She was glaring at me like I’m some kind of trash.”
Kondo-san didn’t remember meeting her. But, in the most difficult phase of Tachibana’s life, he was very kind to her.
“It seems like we did this kind of exchange before…”
That was the secret behind Tachibana’s admiration. So, even though Kondo-san wasn’t the coolest man, she did what she could to get a job at the restaurant.
“Boss, I like you.”
Kondo-san saw Tachibana as a girl. At most, a young woman. So, he didn’t understand such gratitude.
Running was Tachibana’s life. The greatest pleasure. Competing was her pride and she was the pride of her schoolmates.
“Your Achilles tendon was completely torn apart.”
Unable to run, Tachibana was left without ground. Kondo-san’s kindness and maturity gave her new motivation and strength to face her depression, as the two exchanged experiences.
After The Rain review: the rain will definitely pass

Through conversations, Tachibana and Kondo-san faced their pain and understood that everything will pass.
The moments when we feel bad, irritated, anxious will pass. The moments when we feel that we are great, that we know everything and have all the answers will also pass.
The main focus is on having the maturity to realize that time is our ally, making the most of good experiences, which seem to pass quickly, and learning the most from bad experiences, which seem to last forever. But, they won’t.
Why you should watch After The Rain

I won’t leave After The Rain ending explained or a download link here, but After The Rain is a live action adaptation of the manga Shōjo 恋は雨上がりのように, literally, Love Is Like After The Rain. Despite the youthful and feminine characteristics of this manga genre, I found some of Tachiban-san’s dialogues with Kondo-san to be very mature.
So, it’s a Japanese film that escapes a little from the high school universe where a student cultivates a forbidden love for the teacher. But not much. Because she is a minor and he is an older superior. With that, the main characteristics of the shoujo genre are present.

And come back later to tell me what you think in the comments. This Japanese movie was one of the most mature shoujo I’ve watched, considering the characteristic of the genre.
